The Social Enterprise Journey: Equipping a Movement of Changemakers

Over the past two years, my work has increasingly converged around one central question:

How do we equip people to build work that is both economically viable and meaningfully impactful?

Through my work with Georgian College’s Social Innovation Department — first as a collaborator, and now as a Social Innovation Fellow and Lead Course Designer for the Social Innovation for Community Impact Micro-Certification — I’ve had the opportunity to work deeply with a suite of tools designed to answer that question in practice.

Not theoretically.
Not conceptually.
But in real time, with real people, working on real challenges.

What’s become clear is this:

These tools are powerful on their own — but transformative when experienced together, in community.

That insight is what led to the creation of:

The Social Enterprise Journey: Equipping a Movement of Changemakers

This is a three-part, facilitated leadership experience designed for business owners, nonprofit leaders, and community builders who want to strengthen their impact through sustainable, strategic work.

It brings together:

• systems thinking

• social innovation tools

• strategic planning

• and structured peer dialogue

All grounded in a core belief:

Strong, well-designed businesses are one of the most powerful drivers of lasting community impact.

Across three gatherings in 2026, participants will:

• explore the root causes of the challenges they care about

• map the systems and stakeholders shaping their work

• develop a clear Theory of Change

• and design more sustainable, revenue-aligned models for impact

This is not a content series.
It’s a working space.

A place to step back, think clearly, and move forward with intention, alongside others doing the same.

It also marks an important milestone for me personally: This is the first event series I am hosting under my own consultancy.

And it certainly won’t be the last.

This work is made possible through collaboration.

What we’re working on (and what it’s shifting)

Making Connections: Women as Changemakers — Collingwood

Women as changemakers is not a slogan. It’s a proven economic strategy.

At our recent Making Connections event in South Georgian Bay, nearly 80 women came together — with a waitlist of 30 more — not just to grow their businesses, but to think deeply about the role those businesses play in their communities.

What stood out wasn’t just ambition. It was responsibility.

Across sectors, I continue to see the same pattern: when women build profitable, sustainable businesses with intention, the impact doesn’t stop at the bottom line. It shows up in stronger families, more resilient local economies, new models of leadership, and reinvestment into people and community.

This is what capacity looks like.

When women have the support, resources, and relationships to grow, they don’t keep that growth to themselves — they extend it. Into mentorship. Into opportunity. Into the next generation.

That’s why spaces like this matter.

Because when women build together, change doesn’t just happen.

It compounds.

Student Summer Ventures — Registration is OPEN!

This month, The YOU Power Project opened up registration for the next cohort of our flagship summer program, Student Summer Ventures!

From day one, students step into ideas, testing possibilities, and beginning to see themselves not just as learners, but as creators, problem-solvers, and contributors.

What’s powerful about this work isn’t just the businesses that emerge.

It’s the shift in identity.

When young people are trusted with real responsibility and given the tools to act, they rise to meet it. They begin to see what’s possible, not just for themselves, but for the communities they’re part of.

This is how we change systems over time.

Not by waiting for the next generation to be “ready,” but by giving them pathways to lead now.

Spotlight

Nabweru Community Initiative — Uganda

This month, I want to spotlight the work of Baguma Benson, Founder and Executive Director of the Nabweru Community Initiative for Youth Empowerment (NCIYE) in Uganda.

NCIYE is a community-led organization dedicated to creating a society where vulnerable children and youth can realize their rights and meet their basic needs — not through external intervention, but through locally driven, sustainable solutions.

Their work spans:

• Child protection

• Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)

• Entrepreneurship and livelihood development

• HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention

• Youth leadership and advocacy

• Climate and environmental sustainability

What stands out most is their approach:

They are not building for the community.
They are building with it.

I’ve had the privilege of supporting Baguma and his team in strengthening their storytelling, website, and donation systems — and what continues to inspire me is the clarity of their vision and the depth of their commitment to long-term, community-led impact.

On Purpose, Leadership, and Building Differently

I recently had the opportunity to join Wil Singleton on the Balance and Breakthroughs podcast for a conversation that felt deeply aligned with the work I’m doing right now.

We explored what it really means to build a life and business on your own terms — not just in theory, but in practice.

From my early days in the classroom to the work I’m doing now across youth entrepreneurship, social innovation, and community systems, we talked about the moments that required stepping outside of traditional paths and trusting a different way forward.

We also unpacked:

• Why creativity is foundational to entrepreneurship and leadership

• The gaps in traditional education systems — and what’s possible instead

• The shift from “busy” to intentional, purpose-driven work

• How resilience is built through action, not certainty

One idea that stayed with me:

Big change doesn’t start somewhere else.

Closing Message

From Idea to Practice

Across all of this work, I keep coming back to a simple distinction.

There’s a difference between having good ideas and putting them into practice.

That’s what innovation actually asks of us. Not just to imagine something better, but to turn real opportunities and challenges into new or meaningfully improved ways of doing things — and to try them out in the real world.

And when that work is grounded in community, it becomes something more.

Social innovation, at its core, is about working with people to create solutions that are more effective, more sustainable, and more just — so that the value created is shared, not held.

It asks us:

• To look beyond symptoms and into systems.

• To collaborate across roles and sectors.

• To design work that doesn’t just solve problems in the short term, but strengthens the conditions for people and communities to thrive over time.

What I’m seeing, more and more, is that people are ready for this shift.

Not just to talk about impact, but to build it.
Not just to grow, but to grow with intention.
Not just to lead, but to lead in a way that considers who else rises alongside them.

If you’re in that place — where the questions are getting bigger, and the work is asking more of you — you don’t need to have everything figured out.

But you do need to begin putting it into practice.

That’s where real change starts to take hold.
